Sierra began working with ceramics five years ago when she became a student at Alpena Community College. Before becoming an active student in Laurie Wade's ceramics class, she had never worked in sculpture. Since finishing school in December 2017, Sierra has continued to develop new techniques using non-traditional mediums. Over the past year, she has familiarized herself with materials like epoxy resin and polymer clay in an attempt to broaden her potential within the sculpture field. The artist has said,“There are so many things you can do with synthetic materials that you cannot do with clay.” The majority of the work currently displayed is student work from her time at ACC. However, Sierra hopes to move forward with her small studio Mud & Ink and continue creating mixed media sculptures, digital photography, and return to producing painted ceramic creations as well. You can contact Sierra via Facebook, or follow her creative process on Instagram. Sierra Atkinson is a resident of Alpena, Michigan.
