Art in the Loft is a 7,000 square foot, loft-style gallery in the heart of downtown Alpena, MI. Located on the third floor of the historic Center Building, AITL has become the central hub for the arts and creative learning in our region.
Our Gallery can support up to 35 local and state wide artists during the Summer View and Winter View exhibits. The Young Artist exhibit in the Spring, displays the work of over 600 students (K-12) from our local and surrounding schools, and our Juried exhibits each Fall host a nationwide artist competition. Themes for this exhibit vary each year, with the aim to inspire artists to further develop, explore, and expand their creative boundaries.
Our Creative Classroom and Commercial Catering Kitchen offer a full schedule of visual and culinary arts workshops that keep our community engaged with the arts in a meaningful way. We partner with local schools and organizations to provide educational arts programming to students of all ages, with all abilities, in a wide variety of mediums. We also host local musicians and performance groups to ensure a diverse schedule of events, inclusive of all styles and forms of art.
The Loft is open to the public at no cost during regular business hours, and available to rent for private parties, classes, and events. AITL is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, operating primarily through grant funding and the generous donations and support from our Members and local Business Sponsors. All contributions are tax deductible, with donation receipts available upon request.

Store Policies
- Our classes are subject to a minimum registration of 6 or more guests (unless otherwise marked). Numbers that fall below our minimum will unfortunately prevent us from hosting, and reimbursements will be made in the manner they were given. Registration cut off is four days prior to our scheduled session so that our instructors have adequate time to adjust as needed.
- Art in the Loft strives to make art accessible for everyone. As an equal opportunity entity, we offer scholarships for all age groups regardless of financial background. These can be found on our website by visiting www.artintheloft.org/scholarships or by contacting us directly. *Scholarships are available on a first come basis.
- Registering for AITL classes, workshops and experiences on and off our premises is done so at one's own risk (if you are registering a friend or family member, you are doing so with their consent and agreement).
- Our instructors, volunteers and staff strive to maintain a safe and health minded environment, however accidents and/or situations can arise. In the event of an emergency, you are giving us/AITL full permission to handle with care and seek medical attention as needed. *Please notify AITL staff and/or instructors prior to classes, workshops, and experiences of any medical conditions and/or allergies that may apply. Your health and safety are very important to us and arrangements will be made to the best of our ability to honor such.
- By registering you are also acknowledging that AITL staff, instructors and volunteers cannot be held responsible for one's actions, the actions or inactions of others (or any combination of both).
- If a student or registered guest is displaying behavior that could be hurtful or harmful to themselves and/or others (verbal and/or physical), they may forfeit their registration and will be asked to leave (or arrangements made for parent/caregiver pick up).
- AITL is a nonprofit and fully relies on fundraising, grant funding, donations and the like to operate. Photographs and videography help aid in this process. By registering you are giving AITL permission to use photos/videos taken during activities for promotional purposes. If you have a unique situation and/or personal preferences to avoid such, please notify staff prior to class, workshop, and/or experience and your request will be respectfully honored.
